The Largest Solar Panel Rooftop Installation In Germany

As many of you will be aware, Germany are the biggest installer of solar panels in the world. As at 30 June 2013 they had a solar capacity of just over 34 gigawatts.

You will no doubt be interested to hear that Pfenning Logistics Distribution Centre located in Haddesheim, south of Frankfurt in Germany has had installed a rooftop solar panel system of huge proportions. It covers an area amounting to 27 acres (110,000 square meters) and has a capacity of 8.1 megawatts and is the biggest such installation of its kind in Germany capable of providing electricty to 1,846 homes of average size.

There are 33,096 solar photovoltaic panels on the roof of the Pfenning Logistics Distribution Centre with the capability to generate over 7,000 megawatt-hours of energy on an annual basis. The solar array is believed to be the largest of its kind in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

The project to install the solar panels was managed by Wirsol that are a project development company. Its aim had been to complete the installation in only 4 weeks and in July the solar powered system was connceted to the grid having achieved its installation timescale target.

The solar panels will at least allow the logistics company to generate some of its own electricity no doubt making substantial savings. The panels will also result in a saving of around 5,171 tons of CO2 per annum which will be a big help to the environment.

This is a wonderful example of how Germany really is “taking the bull by the horns” as far as leading the way not only in Europe but globally with regard to utilising solar panels at every reasonable opportunity. It would be excellent if the UK were to follow their lead and drive towards hitting this country’s target to becoming more environmentally friendly.
