It will not be long before Guernsey Postal HQ has the biggest array of solar panels in the Channel Islands. This will no doubt be welcome news for those living on Guernsey.
In a joint venture between Guernsey Post and Guernsey Electricity it is expected that the solar panels will be around 200kW. It is being forecast that in the region of 200,000 kWh of electricity will be produced every year.
The energy generated by these solar panels is to be used for the fleet of electric vehicles that will be used by Guernsey Post. It is estimated that the business will have around 40 electric vehicles by the end of 2018. Within a few months after this date, it is estimated that around 80 electric vehicles will be operational.
Such a project will no doubt be of benefit to those living on Guernsey as, by using electric vehicles, this should help reduce the carbon emission levels on the island thus potentially improving things for the islanders.
It would be great to see an increasing number of electric vehicles being used by the post office delivery service here on the UK mainland as this would no doubt prove to potentially be of benefit to people living over here. Yes, such vehicles may well cost more in capital outlay than a petrol or diesel fuelled vehicle but are the potential benefits not worth this additional initial expense. Hopefully, the increased capital outlay will be outweighed by the saving on fuel costs.
Over the last few years, we have seen a large number of homeowners having solar photovoltaic panels fitted to the roofs of their homes but, following changes made to the feed-in tariff scheme, the volume of installations has dropped. It would be lovely to see this turnaround so it will be interesting to see if the government does anything to help make this happen.
