Fort Bliss Military Base Plans To Install Almost 94,000 Solar Panels

Fort Bliss military base intend to have installed a huge 20-megawatt solar farm that will comprise approaching 94,000 solar panels. It is hoped that it could be up and running by 2015.

Maj. Gen. Dana J.H. Pittard , who is Fort Bliss’s commanding general, commented: – “We are excited to be leading the American military in renewable energy, reducing our carbon footprint and making our installation energy secure. We hope that the rest of the Army – the rest of the country, actually – follows our lead.”

This proposed solar farm is believed to be the American army’s biggest renewable energy scheme and should be fully operational by December 2015 with installation work hoping to start around the beginning of 2014.

The solar panels are expected to cover around 200 acres of the base’s land and will provide solar power for the military base’s headquarters and a great deal of East Fort Bliss. The 20 megawatts will equate to around 14% of Fort Bliss’s electricity usage but they hope to increase this to about 65 megawatts over a 5-year period.

The scheme, that has yet to be finalised, is being arranged in partnership with El Paso Electric. The project costing $120 million is to be operated, financed, designed, constructed and owned by a developer that El Paso Electric will select on a competitive basis.

The base wish to achieve net zero carbon emissions and energy consumption by 2018 as part of its environmental campaign called the Fort Bliss Environmental Campaign Plan.

Fort Bliss has been able to lower its consumption of energy by 45% over the last 5 years as well as its consumption of water by 36%. During that time the base has replaced many thousands of toilets, showers and sinks with low-flow ones.

We will continue to monitor progress and continue to provide updates on what is planned to be a huge solar panel project.
