Environmentally Friendly Site Wins Award

Chedham’s Yard is located in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire and is a heritage site that has been restored having originally been a wheelwright and blacksmith’s workshop dating as far back as the 19th century. It has been awarded the Green Tourism Award because of its numerous green initiatives.

Back in 2006 it was proud to win the BBC Restoration Village TV show beating other buildings such as chapels and churches. It is open to the public by prior appointment.

It has received the bronze award within the category for Visitor Attraction having been the only Warwickshire attraction to achieve this award in that particular category.

Chedham’s Yard has done so many things to make it environmentally friendly such as recycling water, fitting low energy bulbs, using compost toilets, utilising cleaning products that are eco-friendly, had solar panels installed, uses water butts and local produce, supports sustainable transport and has a wood burning stove.

Emma Banks, who is the Heritage Project Officer, expressed her satisfaction at the fact that Chedham’s Yard was having an environmental theme over the Easter period. The award was gratefully accepted by a very proud team in recognition of their endeavours to reduce the impact on the environment because of the measures they had taken.

As part of the green themed event that takes place on 30 March people will have the chance to make a bird box to take back home with them. The yard will even provide the materials that will be required to make the bird boxes.

If anybody is interested in helping them at the yard they are looking for ticket office staff, administration staff, tour guides and people to help plan social events. There is an open day for volunteers on 16th March at Wellesbourne’s Methodist Chapel Room.

This sounds like a great event at an interesting venue so why not try and get along to look at the environmental work that has been carried out.
